Philippine Air Force road-tests electric tricycle
Updated March 07, 2009 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is road testing its newly locally built electric tricycle that is capable of carrying a maximum payload of 800 kilos or about eight persons, including the driver, around the base.
The PAF said the tricycle can go as fast as 40 kilometers per hour and consumes only P47 worth of electricity for every 120 km.
Col. Rolando Hautea, 220th Airlift Wing commander, in his report to Air Force chief Lt. Gen Oscar Rabena, said the tricycle uses five commercially available batteries and can be fully charged at any 220-volt outlet for eight to 10 hours.
PAF soldiers who were able to road test the units are optimistic that one day these green tricycles will replace the Isuzu Multicabs as the utility vehicle of choice in most military installations nationwide.
The two electric tricycles, each valued at P140,000, are undergoing evaluation and road testing at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City while another unit has been shipped to Mactan Benito Air Base, the home of the 220th Airlift Wing.– Rudy Santos
