Taguig shifts to electric jeeps

October 11, 2008

To lessen pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, Taguig Mayor Freddie Tiñga Friday vowed to shift to electricity from gas usage in public utility vehicles.

In a speech at the first Taguig City Transport and Traffic Summit, Tiñga said the city government intends to use electric jeepneys and tricycles to service residents in the city.

“Imagine consuming just P20 worth of electricity against the P200 tricycle drivers pay for gasoline,” Tiñga said.

Makati recently deployed electric multicabs to ply routes around the city as an alternative to gasoline- and diesel-powered PUVs.

A top official of an electricity transport company also explained how electricity could increase the take home pay of drivers and operators of tricycles.

“With only eight hours of charging, the e-tricycle can run up to 120 kilometers costing only P38,” said Sean Gerard Villoria, chief executive officer and president of E-SaVe Transport Systems, Inc.

Tiñga also revealed the city’s plan to build a mass transport system and a terminal to serve as drop off points for travelers from Southern Luzon. Tiñga hopes to link the Taguig Express Transit to the Metro Rail Transit and Light Rail Transit railway systems.
